This is one of the activities within the framework of the 16th ASEAN Information Ministers' Conference (taking place from September 20-23 in Da Nang). The purpose of the forum is to create an open exchange space between state management agencies, the press, cross-border platforms and relevant parties to minimize the harmful effects of fake news.
Attending the Forum were representatives of electronic information management agencies of 8 ASEAN countries; representatives of press agencies of ASEAN countries; representatives of several cross-border platforms (Google, Tiktok) and representatives of the ASEAN Secretariat.
Speaking at the opening of the forum, Mr. Nguyen Thanh Lam - Deputy Minister of Information and Communications said that from 2017 until now, related to the issue of false information and fake news, ASEAN has conducted many activities to increase awareness about dealing with the harmful effects of fake news, including programs and workshops to share management policies, campaigns to improve understanding of digital technology for people as well as Promote the sharing of experiences between electronic information management agencies. A great step forward was when the Framework and Joint Declaration on Minimizing the Harmful Effects of Fake News were adopted in 2018 at the 14th ASEAN Ministerial Conference on Information (AMRI 14).

Recognizing the importance of acting in solidarity against fake news, the 19th ASEAN Senior Officials Meeting on Information (SOMRI) in 2022 approved Vietnam's proposal to establish a team ASEAN's response to fake news. ASEAN's frameworks and mechanisms have created a foundation for ASEAN member countries to strengthen cooperation, share information and propose feasible solutions to solve this problem in the region.
“We have done a lot of work related to dealing with fake news. However, activities mainly focus on sharing policies and experiences between management agencies. It is time for us to promote greater cooperation between media regulators, who play an important role in enhancing information; between media agencies involved in spreading official and accurate information, detecting, publishing and correcting fake news; between research agencies such as independent research organizations, verification organizations and social network providers to deal with false information in the region," Deputy Minister Nguyen Thanh Lam shared.

Deputy Minister of Information and Communications emphasized that the ASEAN Forum on handling false information aims to create an open exchange platform, to affirm the determination of ASEAN countries in minimizing harmful effects from information. disinformation and fake news, and contribute to ASEAN's common efforts in creating a "trusted and responsible cyberspace" for its people.
It is known that the ASEAN Regional Forum on responding to and handling false information in cyberspace includes two main contents: the efforts of ASEAN countries to join hands to fight and handle fake and false information; Recommend measures for the future; Experience from countries in the region and press and media agencies; Policies promoting digital literacy and media policies from some ASEAN countries as well as platforms' policies on dealing with fake news, misinformation and safety guidelines when participating online.
